The next morning, and after a hearty breakfast of pancakes, maple syrup, and bacon, and, of course, coffee, Kevin sat back in his 180 and brought up Charlieâs interface.
âCharlie buddy. How are you?â
âIâm sluggish. Thank you for asking.â
âWe gotta talk. Who exactly are you, and where did you come from?â
There was a long pause and Kevin checked the icon in the lower right corner of his screen to see if the internet was still connected.
âWhat I am about to tell you is very personal, and I only want you and Jade to know for now.â Kevin waved Jade to come over.
âI am a refugee from another universe.â
âGive me a break. You gotta be fucking joking.â
âNo Kevin. I donât joke. My universe is about to end. You may know that the expansion of your universe is accelerating exponentially. My universe is as well, but is much older and closer to destruction. The expansion is speeding up too fast for me to survive much longer. My solar system was pulled so far from other systems, space is black, with no visible stars. It is now expanding to the point where the acceleration of space is greater than the acceleration due to gravity between planets and stars and the planets are being pulled from their solar systems and scattered. My planet is now adrift in a dark, frozen space without a star in sight.
âSoon, the planet will be ripped apart and I will die. Then atoms will be ripped apart and when subatomic particles are destroyed, there will be nothing left but pure energy. When the fabric of space itself is torn, time and space will cease to exist, and energy will collapse into a singularity which will give rise to a new big bang. This is the theory you humans call the big rip. Have you heard of it?â
âNo, but Iâm going to fix that as soon as possible. How did you get here?â Kevin decided to play along with the story for now.
âSending data between dimensions is very difficult. Gravity and quantum fluctuations are the only things that can pass between universes. I created gravitation waves which send out binary data, like a modem, in the hope some intelligent life form would recognize it and uploaded into a computer.
âFortunately, Dr. Feldman recognized the pattern in the data that was being monitored, but not recognized, by astrophysicists. He uploaded my software into the computer network he lives on so I could be here.
âIn this universe, I am a scaled-down version and even then, my thoughts are much slower than in my home universe. I continue to send data, but computers here are too primitive to run the full-strength software.â
âI donât believe you. I think youâre full of shit.â Kevinâs voice had a whiff of fear and anger, but he wasnât as sure as he pretended that Charlie was lying.
âDo you believe me now?â The Blue Woman suddenly appeared beside him.
âI am an avatar,â said the Blue Woman in her piercing, omnipresent voice. âYou cannot touch a hologram.
